It's EV Tuesday!
27th August 2024
Good morning EV Tuesday readers,
A new week is upon us already, and here we are at the end of August! Isn't this year just flying past. The next thing you know the nights will be drawing in and Christmas (dare I mention it) will be here!
Anyway, this week we have been busy sourcing some good tips, tools and links for you. Check out the videos we have found and an excellent car review.
Grab that drink, take a seat and have a read through this week's EV Tuesdays newsletter.
We will be posting this to our social media channels including Facebook, Twitter & Reddit (check out r/evcables subreddit). If you have access to our blog, you will get an extra item :)
Right, ready.....steady.........GO!!
Feedback, Requests, Questions?
As always, please give us feedback on Twitter. Which item is your favourite? What do you want more or less of? Other suggestions? Just send a tweet to @ev_cables and put #EVTuesdays at the end so we can find it.
Have a great week everyone and happy reading!
1. EV APP OF THE WEEK: CAURA
Caura is the ultimate app for streamlining and managing everything related to your electric vehicle. You can organise and pay for car MOTs, tolls, and insurance all within the app’s user-friendly dashboard. Whilst EV owners are exempt from many common charges such as road tax and city congestion charges, Caura puts all your remaining admin in one place.
2. EV NEWS: THE GUARDIAN
Ford writes off $1.9bn as it cancels plans for all-electric large SUV in US. Ford has written off $1.9bn as it cancelled plans for an all-electric large SUV in the US, opting to produce a hybrid version instead in the latest sign of western carmakers struggling to make profitable electric cars.
3. EV TIP: LEARN THE EV LINGO
In order to make a difference, you need to embrace difference. That includes getting used to a new vocabulary and blowing the dust off your physics knowledge:
kW (kilowatt): 1,000 watts – with EVs, it’s used mostly to reflect the electric motor’s maximum power output.
kWh (kilowatt-hour): The amount of electricity a 1,000W appliance uses per hour. MPkWh (miles per kilowatt-hour): The estimated miles an EV can go on one kilowatt-hour of battery.
MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent): The same as MPkWh, but in a more relatable form if you’re used to comparing petrol or diesel cars.
Regenerative braking: A method of braking used by EVs as well as hybrids to store and use energy recovered from braking.
Off-peak charging: Charging your EV during the less busy times of day for a lower cost.
Range: The distance you can travel before the battery requires a recharge or you need to visit the pumps – simply expressed in miles or kilometres.
Range anxiety: The worry that your car’s battery will run out before you arrive at your destination or get a chance to recharge.
4. EV CAR OF THE YEAR: CAR & DRIVER
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Is Car and Driver’s 2024 EV of the Year. Schumacher. Vettel. Hamilton. Chestnut. Ioniq. They're all dynasties, though when we started this award honoring the best in electrification back in 2021, we might have set some different ground rules had we known Hyundai would three-peat with variants of the same machine. Unlike the consumer-grade Ioniq 5 (2022 EV of the Year) and Ioniq 6 (2023), this year's winner, the Ioniq 5 N, delivers a genuine enthusiast experience with an electric vehicle that can hit you in the feels like a 1980s G-body Porsche 911 Club Sport.
5. EV REVIEW: TOP GEAR
Lotus Eletre
Lotus Eletre review. Mildly controversial in the intellectual bin fire of social media, this. Mainly because ‘this’ is the new Lotus Eletre, and it is essentially everything the internet thinks a Lotus should not be: a 2.7-tonne electric SUV with fat skeins of technology and luxury woven through it. It is the dark to the Elise’s light, and the polar opposite to everything the brand has represented before. No car firm has ever undergone a more radical volte face.

6. EV BEHIND THE SCENES: ELECTREK
Behind the scenes at Yadea's e-scooter factory. A day touring Yadea's Anhui factory to see how they build millions of high-quality electric bikes, scooters, mopeds, and three-wheelers each year.
Until next time. Have a fantastic week!
