What does “tethered” mean—and why would I want a tethered cable?
“Tethered” essentially means the cable is designed to be permanently fixed to a home or commercial wall box/EVSE with a EV connector at one end (in this case a 3-Phase Type 2 connector).
These cables are more like a permanent plug and go solution - like a fuel pump hose - since the cable is always there, ready to go for you.
How do I use this at home or work?
This cable is designed to be connected to a wall-mounted EV charge point at your home or place of work. Here's how that typically works:
- Electrician installs a wallbox charger (like a Pod Point, Hypervolt, or Zappi) on your home’s exterior wall.
- During installation, they connect this tethered cable directly to the charger (usually by opening the charger casing and wiring the cable in).
- Once connected, the cable stays fixed in place. You just grab the 3-Phase Type 2 plug and insert it into your car’s charge port whenever you need to charge.
Does it need an electrician to install?
Yes this must be installed by a qualified electrician. This is because:
- It involves handling live electrical wiring.
- The connection must comply with UK wiring and EV safety regulations.
- Proper installation ensures safe charging at 16 A or 32 A depending on your home’s capacity and the EV.
Is this cable compatible with my car?
The Wottz® 3-Phase Tethered Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable is compatible with a huge range of EV makes and models. To check which type of cable your EV supports check the EV Database Website. Search for and select your EV model, then scroll down to Charging > Charge Port > Type 2 etc.
What does 3-Phase mean?
3-Phase means the cable uses 3 live wires, to deliver more charging power, more efficiently.
Compatibility for 3-Phase charging is common with commercial buildings and allows for much faster charging: up to 22 kW with the right setup and compatibility.
A 3-Phase cable will still charge regular Type 2 EVs (thanks to backwards-compatibility) - however, the charging speed will be capped by the power setup you are connected to and the car's onboard charging capability.
Which EV models support 3 Phase?
Nearly all European EVs support 3-Phase AC charging at 11 kW.
A smaller subset of EVs (e.g., Renault Zoe, Renault Megane E-Tech, Porsche Taycan, Smart #1/#3) can take full advantage of 22 kW triple-phase charging for rapid charging capability.
To see if your EV supports full 22kW triple-phase charging, check your EV model on the EV Database Website.
Search for your EV model and scroll down to Charging > Charge Power. The maximum charge rate your EV supports will be indicated e.g. 22kW.
Why buy a 3-Phase cable if my EV doesn't support 22kW rapid charging?
There are actually several smart reasons to buy a 3-Phase tethered EV charging cable even if your current car doesn’t support the full 22 kW charging speed:
1. It’s Fully Backward-Compatible
A 3-phase cable will still work perfectly with:
- Single-phase charging points
- Cars that only support 7.4 kW or 11 kW AC charging
Your car simply uses what it can. The cable won’t "overpower" your car—it just enables more flexibility.
2. Future-Proofing
If you upgrade to a newer EV later that does support 3-Phase / 22 kW, you won’t need to buy or install a new cable. Many newer EVs are coming with 11–22 kW onboard chargers, especially in Europe.
3. Universal Use Across Vehicles
If you share the cable between different cars (e.g., at home, a fleet, or a workplace), some vehicles might support 11 kW or 22 kW—even if yours doesn’t. One cable fits all.

- The cable should be kept out of puddles but can be kept outside.
- Please remember to use the rubber dust cover to keep debris from collecting in the connector when not in use.
- Moisture is the most common issue experienced and will lead to corrosion of the pins which are not covered by our warranty.
What are the risks of charging in the rain?
Water can still get into the plug and charging socket during the insertion and removal of the plug from the car. In fact, as soon as you open the charge port or unplug your car, the rain will get onto the pins and stay there until the next time you charge.
